Annual Cedar Hedge Trimming

During maintenance trimming (recommended to be done every year), dead or broken branches will be removed. Additionally, healthy branches will be cut by one-third (and even up to half), which will help your cedars gain density during their seasonal growth.

This annual hedge trimming will give shape to it. It is suggested to trim the top so that it is rounded and narrower than the bottom, so that the sun can reach all branches. Moreover, in winter, snow and ice will not bend the upper branches if the top is rounded. Upon request, our hedge trimming technicians will add cedar fertilizer after this annual maintenance trimming.

If your hedge has been planted for less than 3 years, the annual maintenance trimming will consist of cutting the branches on the sides, allowing the hedge to grow upwards and densify. The base is kept wider than the top.

Rejuvenation Hedge Trimming (Topping)

Rejuvenation trimming reduces the size of the hedge gradually or intensively. The top and sides of the hedge are trimmed to shrink it until it reaches the desired size and height. This type of hedge trimming is done between early spring and early fall. Dead or broken branches are also cut to make room for new growth.

Topping a hedge restores its health and beauty to a neglected or overgrown hedge. Fertilizing the soil after trimming is essential (fertilizer added upon request).

Caring for Your Cedar Hedge

Trimming a cedar hedge during extreme heat isn’t ideal. In the height of summer, trees are already under stress from high temperatures. Their ability to recover after a cut is often reduced especially if the soil is dry.

And if you wait too late in the season, they may not have enough time to heal before the cold weather sets in.

The safest time to trim is between late spring and early summer. At this stage, cedars are still in active growth and respond well to pruning without unnecessary stress.

As for watering, young cedars require a bit more attention. Their shallow roots can’t reach deep moisture in the soil. That’s why deep watering is essential done less frequently but more thoroughly to properly moisten the root zone.

To nourish the hedge, a nitrogen-rich fertilizer can help, but there’s no need to overdo it. A single application in the spring is usually sufficient. In some cases, too much fertilizer can actually harm the roots.

If your cedars appear dry in the middle, have changed color from green, or if you're unsure about their health, don’t wait—seek advice from our professionals. A timely intervention can often prevent more serious damage.
